Crane runways and automated storage & retrieval machines (SRMs) are essential components of industrial production facilities, enabling the safe and efficient transport of heavy loads. Our experienced team manages the complete planning and execution of maintenance and refurbishment measures. Starting with a detailed damage analysis to identify the causes of wear or structural defects, followed by a structural assessment of the system to verify compliance with current engineering standards and identify potential weaknesses in the design, through to the preparation of structured project schedules — we ensure smooth and efficient project execution.

Based on these findings, we manufacture precisely fitting replacement components and carry out professional on-site installation. Throughout the entire process, we work closely with our customers to develop individual, practical, and sustainable solutions.

Process of a typical refurbishment project

1. Damage report and initial assessment

Refurbishment projects usually begin with the first signs of problems, either through your own observations during operation or as part of the legally required annual inspections. Once we receive your enquiry, we analyze the situation in order to develop a sustainable and technically sound solution.

2. Analysis of the cause of damage

In principle, we distinguish between two main causes of damage to crane runways and automated storage and retrieval systems:
Wear: Worn rail heads, burr formation, cracked weld seams, or geometric deviations in track gauge and height.
Design defects: Incorrect structural calculations, inaccurate alignment during initial installation, or incorrectly designed supports.

3. Customized refurbishment concept

Based on the analysis, we prepare a customized refurbishment concept. This can be based on an on-site appointment or, if desired, on photos, inspection reports, or expert assessments. In more complex cases, we involve structural engineers or external experts.

4. Quote and process planning

You will then receive a transparent quote that takes production-maintaining or production-friendly execution into account, including time windows and project coordination.

5. Manufacturing of replacement components

We manufacture all components required for refurbishment or replacement in-house, with our own personnel and on our own machines. This enables us to ensure quality, precision fit, and adherence to deadlines.

6. Professional on-site installation

Our experienced crane technicians carry out the professional installation efficiently, purposefully, and with minimal downtime for your operations.

7. Completion and documentation

On request, you will receive an installation and measurement report documenting correct execution and compliance with all relevant tolerances, as proof for your internal quality assurance or external inspection bodies.

Repair welding

Because crane runway components such as girders, supports, and rails are subject to operational wear, repair welding may become necessary. We first inspect the respective component for defects and then begin the welding work.

Replacement parts manufacturing

If parts of the crane runway or automated storage and retrieval systems can no longer be repaired, we can manufacture replacement parts in our own production hall. Our certified employees manufacture crane runway and AS/RS supports, girders, and rails according to design drawings or samples. We ensure that the replacement parts are precisely matched to our partners‘ crane runways. After manufacturing, we are also happy to take care of replacing the corresponding parts.

Work on crane runway rails and automated storage and retrieval systems

 If the existing crane runway rails or rail systems of automated storage and retrieval systems are worn, several refurbishment options are available. These include:

  • Grinding burr formation on crane runway rails or AS/RS rails
  • Repairing broken or cracked crane runway rail joints using flux-cored wire in accordance with SEB 368 100
  • Re-welding cracked weld seams between the rail and crane runway girder or AS/RS girder
  • Increasing weld seam volume to reinforce the crane runway or AS/RS structure
  • Changing the rail system, for example from square profile to A-profile in clamped or welded execution
  • Replacing the entire girder/rail system
  • Hardfacing worn areas

We carry out all of the measures listed above on both crane runways and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS).

Welding of crane runway rail joints using flux-cored wire in accordance with SEB 368 100:

When welding crane runway rail joints, we exclusively use flux-cored wire welding, as it produces significantly more durable welded joints than electrode welding. Unlike MAG welding, this process is carried out without shielding gas. To control the weld pool, the gap is enclosed with copper backing blocks.

The cover layer of the weld seam is applied using a hardfacing electrode to achieve a particularly wear-resistant surface. Finally, the weld seam is ground smooth and cooled in a controlled manner to create a connection that is as low-stress and even as possible. This enables us to ensure smooth crane travel.

The welding work is carried out in accordance with DIN EN 1090-2:2018 EXC3 and with consideration of SEB 368 100. Only modern welding machines tested in accordance with DIN 17662 are used.

Crane runway surveying

Over time, crane runways and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) may experience deterioration in their geometric condition. This can lead to horizontal (track gauge) and vertical (height) changes, which may have various causes. In such cases, surveying the system is advisable.

As part of a crane runway or AS/RS survey, we can determine deviations from the target condition, identify causes, and propose and carry out refurbishment measures. The survey is performed using state-of-the-art laser measurement technology and documented. We then discuss the evaluation with you and derive further options for action.

Crane runway load capacity upgrades

To ensure that our partners can continue to use their crane runways optimally after changes in use or load increases, crane runway load capacity upgrades are part of our services. Thanks to these reinforcement measures, our certified welders ensure that the load capacity of the crane runway is increased by several tons.
